Where We Fly

Whilst we will be over the Antarctica Treaty area for around 4 hours, approximately 2½ - 3 hours will be spent flying over the actual Antarctic continent with its high rugged cliffs, spectacular mountains and glaciers and huge expanses of ice. Your first view of Antarctica is likely to be an isolated iceberg and you can expect great excitement to come over the aircraft when the first icebergs are seen. We will then fly over the incredible Polar Icecap for some time before reaching the coast and descending to a lower altitude.

In planning our route, considerable time is taken to select the most spectacular area of Antarctica within the range of the aircraft. The selected area will be chosen taking into account:

  • Maximum viewing potential from both sides of the aircraft
  • Maximum penetration over Antarctica
  • Maximum variety in land mass scenery, including high mountains, glaciers, Ice plateau and coastline
  • The best possibility for viewing should weather conditions be adverse

Qantas has prepared 19 different flight plans to enable the Captain to choose the best possible routing, taking weather conditions into account. An example of one of our most popular flights routes from Melbourne is to fly over Hobart then head directly to the South Magnetic Pole.  Normally we see the first icebergs approximately 3 hours 30 minutes south of Melbourne.  We continue over the sea ice to the French base at Dumont d’Urville, where buildings and vehicles are usually visible, before heading east along the coast over Commonwealth Bay (location of Mawson’s Hut). From there, we turn inland and fly south east over the Transantarctic Range to Cape Washington and explore the spectacular mountains of Northern Victoria Land, Cape Hallet and Cape Adare.

You can be sure there will be plenty of time for good photographic opportunities and excellent viewing.

On the day remember these
